The Yorkshire pig breed was developed in Yorkshire, England in 1761. The Yorkshire breed was first imported to the United States in 1830. It was specifically imported to Ohio, but it did not become popular until the late 1940s mainly because of its slow growth rate.
The American Yorkshire Club was reorganized and became a membership organization in 1948.
American Yorkshire pig breed characteristics
The Yorkshire pig size and Yorkshire pig weight are what makes them stand out from other strains of pigs.
- Male Yorkshire pigs can weigh between 550 and 750 pounds. Female pigs can weigh between 450 and 650 pounds.
- Think "Babe!" Yorkshires are light pink in color, making them almost seem like a white pig from the distance.
- The pigs are hardy and robust. They tend to thrive well in different weather climates despite being cold or hot.
- These are calm and friendly pigs!

Uses for the American Yorkshire pig
They are large pigs that produce both well-textured bacon and leaner cuts of meat. Their large size means they aren't suitable for small farms and homesteads, but as long as they have enough space to run around, they will be happy.
Reasons to love this breed
The breed's erect ears and slightly dished faces are adorable. They are known for their mothering ability, and they have an average of 13 piglets per litter. This is a large litter size.
