Woman Brings Dog to Furry Convention Thinking It Was a Pet Party

It was naive but understandable...

Cheryl Wassus volunteers for the organization Pets for Vets, a program that pairs military veterans with rehabilitated shelter dogs. Wassus was asked to help present the program to attendees of the Motor City Furry Convention and she was excited. Not quite knowing what the convention was about, she figured it had to do with pets so she brought her one-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, Link, along.

Once she got to the convention hall she realized this was a different kind of pet party. She told New York Magazine:

"This is just a whole subculture I wasn't even aware existed. The only furry I'd ever seen was at Easter, when somebody might put on one of those gigantic Easter-bunny costumes at a local egg hunt."

Furry conventions are the cumulation of a subculture of people who come together...and love one another dressed in animal costumes. The Motor City Furry Convention picked Pets for Vets as their charity of choice for the convention and raised over $10,000 by the end of the weekend.

Cheryl said the convention attendees were very interested and respectful during the Pets for Vets panel discussion and she even saw some tears as she explained how pets can help people with PTSD. She learned that "furries" are often misunderstood themselves and are more comfortable in their pet costumes to gain "confidence in social circles."

Cheryl's son, who knew very well what furrycons are, decided to post the funny misunderstanding on Twitter.

Cheryl said it was actually good training for young Link, putting him in big crowds surrounded by people in costume.

And at the end of the day, Cheryl says, "To each his own. This seems pretty harmless. I saw little pieces of humanity I'd never seen before."
