The residents and staff at The Piper Assisted Living and Memory Care in Kansas City, Kansas are giving some sweet little kittens the right start in life.
As the first official location of the Great Plains SPCA's Senior Foster Friends Program, The Piper has agreed to foster two of the shelter's kittens on-site until they're old enough to be adopted into forever homes.
"We are honored to have been selected by the Great Plains SPCA as the first location for the Senior Foster Friends Program...Innovative programming, like Senior Foster Friends, aligns perfectly with our commitment to offering a unique senior living model that changes the perception of how senior living should be," said Michelle Nichols, community leader for the Piper in a Great Plains SPCA press release.
It was smiles all around when the kittens arrived at the Piper:
This is a win-win. The kittens will be doted on and socialized in a home-like environment, and The Piper's residents will receive all the benefits that animal companionship provides.
Studies have shown that senior citizens who enjoy the company of animals experience a variety of health benefits such as lowered blood pressure and cholesterol, improved memory, and emotional wellbeing.
The Great Plains SPCA is hoping to expand the Senior Foster Friends Program, and invites Kansas City-area assisted living facilities to contact its Foster Care Director, Kriste Everett for more information about how to apply: [email protected]
