Living With Furry Floofs: Life With Samoyed Dogs

Besides being adorable floofs, Samoyed's are great family dogs.

Dog breeds have varying personality traits even within each breed. The Samoyed is no different. While the pups may look like they drifted away from a snowy mountain, they are the sweetest companions. Affectionately known as a Sammy, these pups were bred in the arctic and once used for hunting, herding reindeer, and pulling sleds for the Samoyede people in Siberia.

Samoyeds have a lot of fur. The fur kept them warm in the cold weather in their Siberian homes. These pups love cooler climates and are not big fans of warm weather. Their white coat is a double coat with a top coat of long hairs that may look white. However, they actually have a bit of silver in them. The thick coat keeps the undercoat clean. This bottom layer of dense, soft fur actually keeps the pup warm in addition to their outer coat.

Purebred Samoyed puppies will have pure white fur or biscuit color fur. According to the American Kennel Club, true Samoyed's also have unmistakable blue eyes. Even though they have a ton of fur, the Samoyed Breed is considered a hypoallergenic dog. They do have very specific grooming needs. Since they have so much fur, they are subject to tangles. They go through an intense shed twice a year known as blowing coat, though the sled dog does tend to shed all year long. Starting to groom them during puppyhood will get the pups used to grooming that they will endure throughout their lifespan.

Interestingly enough, Samoyed dog fur is used in knitting much like angora fur. It has also been used in flies for fly fishing.

Samoyed's were originally working dogs, much like a husky. They have a high energy level and need long walks and daily exercise. According to the Samoyed Club of America, they need to have the right amount of exercise during the day, or they may get bored. All dog owners know that boredom often leads to destructive behaviors like digging. Also, it is important to make sure they get enough exercise. Otherwise, they can pack on the pounds, becoming rather rotund. It also helps if they eat high-quality dog food. They also have ??natural herding instincts and can pull carts with ease. Sammy's also enjoy agility courses and other challenges.

They are a happy breed hence the nickname "Sammy smile." Since their mouth is upturned, drool does not fall out of their mouths, thus preventing icicles from forming at their snouts. However, since the Samoyed temperament is so friendly, they make for terrible watchdogs, though they will bark if something approaches that they do not recognize.

While these pups suffer from health problems like hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy, a breeder can tell you what health conditions their specific genetic line is predisposed to. In addition, these sweet pups have a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
