When her horse suffered a devastating accident, one young girl refused to give up. In doing so, she made her own miracle.
When Taylor Spurgeon took her horse, Paula, for a ride in November of 2011, she never dreamed that it might be their last. After turning Paula back out after their ride, Paula suffered a devastating accident, becoming trapped under the paddock fence. Spurgeon and her barn owner worked to free Paula, breaking the fence, but Paula wouldn't rise after the accident.
A vet was summoned and checked Paula's back legs for injury. While the back legs themselves weren't injured, they weren't functioning, either, and the vet surmised that Paula had injured her spine in the accident. Despite administering treatments, Paula didn't improve and the vet advised that she would likely never walk again; the kindest thing would be to put her down.
But Spurgeon refused to give up on her horse. They pulled Paula back to her stall on a large wood slab and gave Paula three days to stand up. Paula stood up again within the first 24 hours, but had a long recovery in front of her. Spurgeon was told that, if the horse did survive, she would never be rideable.
Sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in, and Spurgeon fought for her horse, taking her through every step of her recovery. And, well, you just have to see it for yourself.
A horse that doesn't want to give up, and a girl who's willing to do anything to help her get better is the recipe for success, even in the aftermath of a devastating accident.
Here's hoping that this girl and her mare have many years of happy rides ahead of them - they have certainly earned it!
