While riding alongside the road, two riders and their horses nearly lost their lives to a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road.
Warning: This alarming video is very difficult to watch. It captures the moment when a car, traveling on the wrong side of the road, plows into two horses and their riders. The riders had been traveling alongside the road and had next to no time to avoid the vehicle.
The incident occurred in Ely, Cambridgeshire and is currently under investigation. One rider was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and one of the horses was treated by a vet. The car did slow down and pull over after the incident.
You can see the video of the incident below:
You'll notice that the riders in the video were doing a lot of things right. They were off to the side of the road, and they were wearing readily visible clothing. Unfortunately, there's not much more that they could have done in this situation.
If you do opt to ride alongside the road, then there are some precautions which can help to keep you safe. Try to ride on roads where there is plenty of visibility, so that you can see oncoming cars and they can see you. If there is a shoulder, ride on it, and try to keep your horse out of the actual road. As drivers approach, try to make eye contact with them and signal them to slow down or move over, if necessary.
The accident in this video could have been tragic, and appears to be the result of reckless driving. The more we can do to spread the word about road safety around horses, the fewer incidents there should be involving horses and vehicles.
