Emotional healing will be important in the aftermath.

Days after the horrendous mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 that left 58 people dead and nearly 500 people injured, people are still trying to make sense of the senseless murders. The LCC K9 Comfort Dogs are trying to help with that healing the best they can.

Therapy dogs from around the country were flown to Vegas to help where they are needed.

Nine dogs came from the Illinois Comfort Dogs branch, four from Nebraska, and the other five came from the West Coast. The different branches of comfort dogs are all affiliated with Lutheran Church Charities.

The dogs are making their way to different hospitals to put a smile on people's faces- from victims and survivors of the shooting, family members and friends mourning the fallen, to nurses, doctors, and first responders at the scene.

They met with children in schools that have felt the blow to their community and may not understand why this happened. None of us do.

And even Anderson Cooper got a hug in while he was there reporting on the tragedy.

The dogs made sure to attend the vigil to mourn along with the rest of Las Vegas while the country watched and mourned in their own way.

The therapy dogs are bringing smiles to people's faces in a very dark time because there is just something powerful about a dog putting its head on your lap when you are crying.

"The key is for people to cry and for people to start talking about what they're are going through, and it's a key part of the healing process," said Tim Hetzner, president and CEO of Lutheran Church Charities and founder of the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministries.

"The great thing about the dogs, they're unconditional, confidential and safe."

And while there may never be an answer to why this happened, people can take comfort in the way the country has come together and therapy dogs are kind of like the glue connecting us all.
