When this dog is surrendered to a shelter, he seems to know exactly what is happening - and he's not okay with it.
Dogs seem to have an innate sense about situations. It's what allows them to know when you are tired or sick, and it's also what alerts them when they need to defend your safety. Unfortunately, it also means that when this dog is surrendered to a shelter, he senses what's happening. And his reaction is heartbreaking.
This video is both sad and difficult to watch. Toto the dog is surrendered to the Carson Animal Control office in California because he is "too vocal." But his reaction when it's time for him to be taken away says it all. He stands up against his owner's leg and pulls his ears back against his head. The look in his eyes says everything.
Luckily for Toto, he was adopted not long after being surrendered. But some dogs aren't so lucky. Some dogs live in no-kill shelters for years, and sometimes overcrowded shelters are forced to put dogs to sleep in order to make room for more adoptable dogs. Dog overpopulation is a very real issue in the United States.
So, before you bring home a dog, realize that owning a dog is a long-term commitment. If you bring home a dog, be prepared to care for that dog for the rest of its life. Going to a shelter can be traumatizing for a dog, and his life is sure to change if you decide he can't stay in your life any longer.
Want to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog? Adopt! If you're thinking about adding a dog to your family, then head to your local shelter. You never know what great dog you'll come across who's in need of a home. You can change his life, and he's sure to change yours.
