The tradition was a bit of an accident.
Neydi and Carlos Romero of Bedford, Texas were married a few years ago. To celebrate their first wedding anniversary they adopted a new dog from a local shelter. Then they did it again the next year. Then the next year came another new shelter dog...
"For our first anniversary Carlos brought in Captain without telling me," Neydi told Buzzfeed News. "Then for the second anniversary, we brought in Teddy. Me and Carlos were talking about how we get a dog every single year and we were talking about continuing with the tradition."
After adopting Chewy, the newest member of their growing shelter dog pack, Neydi says that might be enough. She wanted to stop at two dogs but when seeing where Chewy was living, in a run-down shelter, she couldn't help herself and gave him a new life.
"I didn't want the last one. He wasn't very safe, so we decided to bring him in."
Neydi thinks that the reason she wants a bunch of dogs is because she wasn't allowed to have any growing up. It was always a childhood dream to own dogs.
"We've always liked dogs, but my mom never let me have them," she explained to Buzzfeed.
Neydi's sister decided to share this unique tradition on Twitter where it got plenty of feedback.

Someone else suggested they foster dogs each year instead.
So I saw this on BuzzFeed, and first oh my goodness how adorable, and secondly after 5 dogs, how about each anniversary they foster a dog?

But Neydi has definitely decided that five will be the maximum number of dogs in the house. She thinks that after their fifth anniversary they will start a yearly donation to local shelters or set up a rescue foundation instead.
"It makes more sense. If we keep going, it's going to be pretty wild. In a perfect world we would be getting dogs every year ... but it's the real world."
But this much they know, they want to celebrate each wedding anniversary by saving a dog's life and giving them a loving home, and that sweet tradition is something we can all aspire to.
