Meet Freddy, Zeus, and 3 More Gentle Giants Sharing the Title of Tallest Dogs

Which breeds do you think of when you hear "the world's tallest dogs"? I think of breeds like the Great Dane, a Neapolitan mastiff, Scottish deerhound, and the Newfoundland. They're all huge! Let's just say the Great Dane is the breed that wins for tallest! What we really want to know is what the Guinness World Records says about the tallest dogs over the years.

We wrote about Freddy, at 7 feet 6 inches, this dog is on record as being one of the biggest dogs in the world according to the Guinness World Records! So let's start with him! Note that some of these dogs are no longer with us so this list represents dogs that are alive and those that have passed but share the title of tallest dog.

1. Freddy

In 2016, Freddy was recorded as the tallest dog in the world. He towers over his owner and lives in Essex.

Freddy who was 1.035 m (3 ft 4.75 in) tall when measured in Leigh-on-Sea, UK, on 13 September 2016.

2. Zeus

He was huge!

Measuring an incredible 111.8 cm (44 in) from foot to withers, Zeus was the same size as an average donkey. Standing on hind legs, he stretched to 7 ft 4 in and towered over his owner. He earned his title in 2012.

Zeus passed away at age five in 2014.

3. Giant George

Giant George measured 2.20 m (7 ft 3 in) from nose to tail and weighed 111.130 Kg (245 lbs) in February 2010 and was as tall as two average golden retrievers.

4. Titan

In 2009, Titan was named the tallest dog and stood 42.25 inches from floor to shoulder.

Todayshow.com tells us,

"The Guinness Book of World Records officially says an ailing 4-year-old Great Dane named Titan from San Diego is the world's tallest dog. Owner Diana Taylor says Titan is blind, deaf, epileptic and undergoes acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments every three weeks."

5. Gibson

Described as a gentle giant who worked as a therapy dog, Gibson was measured at 107 cm (42.2 in) tall in August 2004.

As well as being noted for his height, during his showbiz career Gibson wore a distinctive extra large bandanna and regularly appeared on US TV, notably The Oprah Winfrey Show and Good Morning America.

Sadly, Gibson passed away in 2008.

There you have it! These are the tallest dogs and it's no surprise that the Great Dane leads the pack here. So these tall dogs have a lot in common as you've seen. The average height is around 7 ft and all of these dogs are record holders.

Other tall breeds that we didn't mention are the English Mastiff, Anatolian Shepherd, Saint Bernard, and Great Pyrenees.
