While the world was counting down to 2017, Surf Dog Ricochet spent New Year's Eve celebrating her biggest achievement yet.
With help from her greatly appreciated supporters, the world's first ever SURFice dog raised half a million dollars for more than 250 worthy causes. After making an independent decision to hop on a surfboard with a disabled surfer, Ricochet has spent her career as a SURFice dog helping others in every way she can.
Ricochet, an ocean-loving Golden Retriever, started raising funds for humans and animals in need in 2009. Over the years, she's made donations to support the healing and well-being of children with special needs, people with disabilities, wounded warriors, and veterans suffering from PTSD.
This year, her eighth annual Howliday Giving Drive raised money for her Waves of Empowerment and Operation Socialization initiatives. Each program focuses on fostering mutually beneficial relationships between animals and humans. Ricochet brought awareness to the separate causes via her social media channels, where she garnered attention by waging a hilarious war against Elf on the Shelf.
Between all the fun and games, Ricochet is serious about helping as many people as possible. She was the first ever therapy dog to use adaptive surfing to empower children and adults. Her warm cuddles, slobbery kisses, and unfailing support have been felt by people all over the world.
Her day's work involves taking both new and veteran surfers out into the water. She intuitively knows how to balance the board while providing both physical and mental support when needed. With her help, people with disabilities experience the thrill of surfing in a way that promotes confidence, empowerment, and most of all, fun!
She's since inspired other dogs to take on the role of SURFice dog and remains the Canine Ambassador for Surfers with Disabilities. She combines the healing power of the ocean with the specific comfort of dogs to form lifelong bonds with everyone she shares a board with.
Now that she's reached her half a million dollar milestone, Ricochet isn't slowing down. She'll soon be celebrating her ninth birthday, and her New Year's resolution is to raise even more money and to paw it forward in every way she can.
