Animal rescue organization Animal Aid Unlimited, India received an urgent call about a stray dog stuck in a sewage ditch.
Rescue team workers wasted no time getting to the scene. When they arrived, they were met with a shocking sight.
The emaciated dog had an enormous, maggot-infested wound on her neck. She was too weak to crawl out of the sewage ditch, so there she sat, waiting to die.
A rescue worker wrapped her in a blanket and carefully extracted her from the sewage. Once free from her prison, the dog was rushed to Animal Aid's shelter.
There, she began receiving emergency medical treatment. Rescue workers applied powder to her wound to kill the maggots, started her on desperately-needed IV fluids, and then sedated her to begin cleaning the massive wound.
Whether or not the dog would survive was uncertain for quite some time. However, after six weeks of intensive treatment, the dog, named Shanti, was miraculously back on her feet.
