Some lucky senior dogs are getting a second chance at Rescue Ranch, Inc.
Located in Yreka, California, Rescue Ranch is a nonprofit, no-kill dog shelter that accepts dogs of all breeds and ages.
About one-quarter of Rescue Ranch's dogs are seniors. As is the case in many shelters, senior dogs are often considered less adoptable for a number of reasons, including increased medical needs and a shorter remaining lifespan.
However, there are many benefits to adopting a senior dog. Seniors often require a little less exercise than younger animals, and many have been pets before, so they know the ropes and are already well adjusted to the rhythm of household life.
Unfortunately, the negatives of adopting a senior tend to overshadow the benefits, and countless older dogs languish in shelters because of the stigma of their age. Rescue Ranch has come up with a creative solution to this problem.
In the hopes of getting some of their older dogs adopted into forever homes, Rescue Ranch has instituted a new, specialized adoption program. The new program is designed to help some of the ranch's distinguished older canine ladies and gentlemen find themselves loving forever homes with fellow senior citizens of the human variety.
Dogs find forever homes and seniors get the precious companionship of man's best friend. It's a win-win.
To sweeten the deal for interested parties, the ranch is prepared to offer senior adopters and their new adoptees help with vet visits and associated costs, and will take the animals back if necessary. Any dog adopted from Rescue Ranch is spayed or neutered, current on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, and microchipped.
Rescue Ranch is a nonprofit organization that relies on the support of the public to continue its lifesaving work.
