It's not every day a walk with your dog turns into a rescue mission.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) in Greece is committed to helping as many stray animals as possible. They take in animals when their owners can no longer care for them, they find cats and dogs roaming the streets searching for food, and a large number of their animals come to them because of one specific reason.

There's an area near the mountains where abandoned litters of puppies, rabbits, birds, and kittens are often found in cardboard boxes. The area is known as a pet dumping ground, abandonment is unfortunately a common thing, and it's also where countless kittens and puppies are attacked by wild animals like hungry foxes.

SCARS volunteers don't always get there in time to save the defenseless strays, but one volunteer was with her rescue dog named Aragon in the right place at the right time.

The pair was out walking when Aragon started pulling his owner toward one of the many boxes found littering the ground. When they got closer, they could hear the frantic sounds of kittens desperate to survive.

The tiny black and white kittens were only a few weeks old, and there was no way of telling how long they'd been in the small box.

The entire litter was brought back to SCARS, and the organization's veterinarians were thrilled to announce that thanks to Aragon's good instincts, the kittens were expected to live. They were saved from the side of the mountain, but their struggle wasn't over yet.

They were still too young to be adopted, and without a nursing mother cat, they needed special attention. SCARS volunteers worked around the clock to keep them fed and comfortable, but the lucky kittens also got help from a special new family member.

Aragon had saved the little kittens from dying on the mountain, but he knew his job wasn't done. He refused to leave all the caretaking to the humans and took the official position of best foster dad. He laid by his tiny charges and snuggled with them as they slept and watched over them as they played.

Thanks to Aragon and the rest of the team at SCARS, the tiny kittens that were left to die on a mountainside are now looking for their forever homes. You can learn more about SCARS and inquire about adopting a new family member on Facebook or the SCARS website.
