A quick-thinking police officer prevented a potential tragedy when he caught a loose horse that had wandered onto a busy California highway.

Officer Love of Stockton California Highway Patrol was driving south on Interstate-5 when he happened upon a horse. Officer Love was en route to check on a disabled motorist, but spotted a brown and white pinto heading up the embankment onto the shoulder of the highway.

Seeing that the horse was about to enter traffic, Officer Love stopped and managed to keep the horse on the highway shoulder. A citizen spotted the situation and stopped to give Officer Love a dog leash to help him contain the horse.

With the leash around the horse's neck, the officer managed to tie the horse to his police car's bumper.

The horse stayed with Officer Love while they waited for animal control and its owners to arrive. It turns out the horse had escaped from a farm near the highway. He was eventually transported safely back home.

Many Facebook users were very thankful for the officer's life-saving efforts:

If you ever spot a loose horse while on the road, please contact your local police department immediately. If possible, try to keep the horse out of traffic or signal other motorists to slow down. Just be sure not to risk your safety while doing this, as your best bet is to wait for the police to arrive.
