Two family dogs, Slayer and Paco, showed loyalty and love when it mattered most.

Melissa Butt from southwest Florida has her two pit bulls to thank for saving the lives of her two grandchildren. Four-year-old Zayden and one-year-old Mallory were playing in the garden at their grandmother's house when they encountered a deadly snake hidden in the grass. The copperhead was only a few feet away from the children when Slayer and Paco saw it.

The big dogs put their bodies between the children and the snake as the grandkids were ushered safely away. The dogs used their big barks to try and scare the serpent away, but their plan didn't work. The copperhead lunged toward Slayer and bit the dog twice on the face. As Slayer struggled to dislodge the snake, his buddy, Paco, came to his aide.

Both pit bulls fought and killed the snake, but they were both seriously injured. Paco was bitten on the elbow, and they needed immediate veterinary care if they were going to survive the attack.

After ensuring her grandchildren were unharmed, Butt rushed her dogs to Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners Hospital. Both dogs were in excruciating pain, but the life-saving treatment they needed wouldn't come cheap. The dogs had to get anitvenin into their systems quickly, but Butt worried she wouldn't be able to afford the treatment. She told WTVJ-TV:

"They don't ask for anything. All they want is your love, so it's very hard to see them in need, and not be able to do a whole lot for them."

Help! Two young pit bulls, hailed as heroes by their owner, are recovering after being attacked by a deadly copperhead...

The thought of letting the two canine heroes suffer was unbearable, and Butt was overjoyed when a local animal rescue group decided to help. Frankie's Friends is a non-profit organization that provides grants to help pet owners, shelters, and veterinary clinics care for the animals that need it most. The group quickly organized an emergency fundraiser, and they ended up earning enough money to cover both dogs' veterinary bills.

Yay! Slayer was happy to be reunited with his family and has officially been discharged from the hospital! This heroic dog took a bite to the snout protecting his family from a deadly copperhead snake. Frankie's Friends was able to help with the veterinary care needed to save his life. Thanks to those generous donations, both Slayer and Paco received the treatment they needed in time. Paco recovered quickly, but suffering from two bites, Slayer's snout was swollen to twice its normal size. He had trouble eating and breathing, but thanks to excellent veterinary care, he was able to rejoin his family at home on Wednesday.

Butt knows her grandchildren had been in great danger, and she's overcome with gratitude for her two dogs. They behaved like heroes and proved dogs really are man's best friend.
