"The result of a breeding between the hairless Donskoy and the Oriental Shorthair, the Peterbald was created in 1994 and quickly grew popular throughout St. Petersburg, Russia. It's his popularity in that location that resulted in his name: the Peterbald."

Some common questions that come up about this breed are all focused on this cat's appearance. And, of course, whether or not this breed is the same as a Sphynx.

Are Peterbald cats hypoallergenic?

Petinsurance.com tells us that Peterbalds are not hypoallergenic. Allergic reactions are still common around these cats, which can be triggered by thing like the cat's saliva, coat, and dander.

Do Peterbald cats have hair?

Peterbald cats are born with a hair-losing gene, as they can be bald at birth or have a flocked (90 percent hairless), velour, brush, or straight coat. With or without hair, the Peterbald can be born in any color with any possible markings.

3 differences between Peterbald and Sphynx cats?

For starters, Peterbald cats have longer heads, almond-shaped eyes, and lower ears compared to Sphynx cats. Sphynx cats typically have broken or no whiskers at all, while Peterbald cats have a classic "cat mustache." Also, Peterbald cats have 5 coat layers that can be shed while a Sphynx is entirely hairless.

Interesting fact: the Peterbald has webbed, oval-shaped paws.

How much do Peterbald cats cost?

Finding this breed may be difficult and hairless cats are often sold for higher prices. This breed is on the list of most expensive cats! It's listed to sell for as much as $1,000.

Who's purring now? Here are some other fun facts:

  • Health issues include their sensitivity to the sun and they can easily get sunburn and their lack of fur and hairlessness can cause bruising!
  • The Peterbald cat breed is known to be dog-like with an ongoing personality
  • This cat is highly vocal, like Siamese cats.

Now you must want to run out and bring home Peterbald kittens after reading this! These bald cats are adorable. You could also adopt a tabby as that's one of our fave breeds.
