"The result of a breeding between the hairless Donskoy and the Oriental Shorthair, the Peterbald was created in 1994 and quickly grew popular throughout St. Petersburg, Russia. It's his popularity in that location that resulted in his name: the Peterbald."

Some common questions that come up about this breed are all focused on this cat's appearance. And, of course, whether or not this breed is the same as a Sphynx.

Peterbald cats are born with a hair-losing gene, as they can be bald at birth or have a flocked (90 percent hairless), velour, brush, or straight coat. With or without hair, the Peterbald can be born in any color with any possible markings.

3 differences between Peterbald and Sphynx cats?

Sphynx cats typically have broken or no whiskers at all, while Peterbald cats have a classic "cat mustache." Also, Peterbald cats have 5 coat layers that can be shed while a Sphynx is entirely hairless.

Interesting fact: the Peterbald has webbed, oval-shaped paws.

Finding this breed may be difficult and hairless cats are often sold for higher prices. This breed is on the list of most expensive cats! It's listed to sell for as much as $1,000.
