Moms are the best when it comes to giving advice and comfort, but it turns out they're not so great at identifying dogs.
Hannah Murphy, a comedian and writer from California, was in New York visiting family when everyone decided to go on a bike ride. On the way home, they made a pit stop at a restaurant called La Lanterna in Yonkers.
They ordered wine and started to unwind in the casual outdoor eating area. Murphy left the table for a few minutes, and when she came back, her mom had made a new "friend."
Murphy posted on Twitter saying her mom kept telling her to "take a look at that adorable Dachshund, he's sleeping." As a family of dog lovers, of course Murphy followed her mom's stare to see the cute pup for herself. But wherever she looked, she didn't see a dog.
When Murphy said she didn't see anything, her mom got a little mad. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to gush about a dog with an uncooperative person. She kept insisting the Dachshund was "right in front of your face," and Murphy eventually got out of her seat to get a view from her mom's perspective.
This method seemed to work, but what she saw wasn't a dog. The dog in question was actually a purse. In all fairness, the bag was suspiciously shaped like a sleeping Dachshund, but Murphy couldn't help but share the hilarious story on social media.
my mother was giggling at this and told me to "take a look at that adorable dachshund, he's sleeping", she was looking at a purse: pic.twitter.com/ZyNKaLMxKI

She posted to Twitter, and it's been retweeted over 45,000 times. People are laughing at her mom's mistake, but they're also admitting to their own embarrassing cases of confused identity. Apparently a lot of random objects look like dogs.
I just had the exact same experience at an airport bar in Houston the other day lol pic.twitter.com/F3YRYaCFbb

Throughout all the media attention, Murphy's mom has been a good sport. She told BuzzFeed that she's "choosing to own the ditzy mom thing." Because in all seriousness, hilarious mistakes like this one are just another reason why we love our moms.
