The new movie "Megan Leavey" tells the true story of a Marine who fought to adopt her K9 partner, and who wouldn't take no for an answer.

Imagine that your dog, your work partner, saved your life. Then imagine that you had to leave him in the most dangerous place on earth, and weren't allowed to adopt your best friend when he retired. That's the premise of the new movie "Megan Leavey," but it's not just a fictionalized movie plot. It's true.

The real-life Megan Leavey was a young Marine Corporal who developed a unique bond with a challenging military combat K9, Rex. Rex the German Shepherd was a particularly aggressive dog, and Leavey worked with the dog to train him. The two were deployed to Iraq, where they completed more than 100 different missions. An IED injured them both, and Leavey undertook a massive fight to gain the right to adopt the military combat dog who had saved her life.

When people work with their dogs, they can form incredibly strong bonds. Whether they're soldiers, police officers, or rescue workers, people who work alongside their dogs every day often depend on their canine partners for safety.

The issue of adopting retired working dogs has come into the limelight in the past few years. Police Officer Matt Hickey fought for the right to be able to adopt his K9 partner when the dog was retired. (Hickey was successful, purchasing his partner for $1.)

Police Sergeant David Evans also petitioned to be able to retire his K9 partner, Ivy, when Evans himself retired from the police force. Luckily there are also plenty of happier stories where K9 adoptions go well, and retired K9s go home to live with their handlers.

"Meagan Leavey" is in theaters now starring Kate Mara, Tom Felton, and Edie Falco and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite; you can find local showings via the movie's official site, on Bleeker Street Media.
