When 30-year-old Gordon Delacroix's senior dog, Birdy, was diagnosed with cancer, Delacroix was crushed.

Delacroix and Birdy, have been best buds for 15 years. So, understandably, Birdy's cancer diagnosis was devastating.

But instead of dwelling on the heartbreak, Delacroix came up with a great way to honor their lifelong friendship. He decided to recreate a photo of himself and Birdy taken in front of his grandmother's house in Belgium twice before, once when Delacroix was 15, and then again at age 25.

Check out the duo's before-and-after photos:

Exactly how long Birdy has left remains to be seen.

"He could easily be great for another six months, but it's also possible that he'll get very sick again soon and this time for the last time," says Delacroix.

Hopefully, Birdy has plenty of quality days ahead. Regardless, his special bond with his best friend has now been immortalized in these bittersweet before-and-after photos.

And as far as the future is concerned, Delacroix has this to say:

"It breaks my heart just to think about it, but we've had so many great years and adventures together. I'm grateful he was part of my life."
