Buy some underwear and adopt a cat at Mapalé by Espiral.
The lingerie company is part of the Humane Society of Broward County's feline socialization program. Instead of spending all day cooped up at the shelter waiting to be adopted, cats roam the offices at Mapalé by Espiral.
When customers come into the offices, they, too, have the chance to interact with the kitties. One cat has already been adopted with the hope that more customers will take a liking to a furry new friend.
Socialization programs increase the chance of adoptability not only by exposure but also by influencing the behavior of the animals. Pets that might be more stand-offish at a shelter are not as likely to go home with a new owner. But if the animals are allowed to interact in an area they can call their own and fraternize with people routinely, the odds they get adopted are much greater.
Two cats are currently setting up shack in the Mapalé by Espiral office. Storm and Mulchi greet customers and snooze on desks daily.
Once a cat is adopted, another feline from the shelter can take its place in the program. The company and Humane Society hope people leave with underwear in one hand and a cat in the other.
