Sher Polvinale has dedicated her life - and her home - to senior dogs.
Polvinale is the founder and director of House with a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary. Polvinale and her late husband founded the nonprofit organization in 2006 in their Gaithersburg, Maryland home.
House with a Heart is dedicated to providing ailing and unwanted senior dogs with a forever home. Pets come to the sanctuary from rescues, shelters, and owners who are no longer able to care for them. All of the animals at the sanctuary receive top quality, individualized veterinary care and specialized diets. Every animal gets the very best.
Polvinale considers caring for these elderly animals her life's work. She is on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week caring for the animals and maintaining the two-acre property. But Polvinale is not alone. As of 2017, House with a Heart boasts a dedicated army of 55 volunteers who help with everything from feeding and medicating the dogs, to scooping poop, to walking and exercising the dogs, to doing yardwork, and everything in between.
The sanctuary is both a forever home to a pack of canine residents, as well as a foster home to dogs who stand a greater chance of being adopted. The House with a Heart "Sanctuary of Your Own" Program helps spread the word about adoptable special needs dogs at the sanctuary.
