Two highly sought-after cattle dogs broke the record for highest sale at the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale in Red Bluff, California. Gurdy and Rose are two Border Collies that turned heads when they were sold for more money than the bulls and gelding bovine that were the main attraction.
16 dogs were up for sale at the Red Bluff Stock Dog Sale and competing in the working dog competition. The talented dogs were each sold for thousands of dollars, averaging $8,968 each and totaling over $143,000.
Gurdy, the female red and white Border Collie is known for her sharp skills and strong bite. Rose, who came in third place, also sold for $30,000.
Herding dogs do incredible work on a farm and can be a rancher's best employee. A good working dog can mean the success or failure of a ranch and, while it may seem absurd to some that they are this expensive, are usually worth the price tag.
On the other hand, there are Border Collies and herding dogs in shelters around the country that, maybe with extra training, could also be highly valuable on farms.
