Is Getting Pooped On By Birds Actually Good Luck?

If a bird poops on you or anything you own, it's said to be good luck!

The Russian superstition is based on the rare odds of actually being pooped on by a bird. A rabbit's foot or horseshoe might be the more traditional objects relating to symbols of good luck, but honestly, nothing will be as strange as bird poop.

With as many beautiful birds as there are in the sky, it's supposedly more rare to be pooped on by one than it is to win the lottery. Naturally, this prompts many people to play the lotto when they do get pooped on by a winged wayfarer. (Can you imagine having a winning ticket for the Powerball after getting pooped on by a bird? Now that would be some good fortune!)

Is A Bird Pooping On You Good Luck?

Now, we know that parking a car under a tree is a recipe for disaster, so you're tempting fate if you play that game, but walking around town is a different story. Thanks to one curious mind considering the number of pigeons around, average poop rate, and time spent outside, mathematician and probability expert Dr. Peter Olafsson helped devise a formula to determine the chances of getting hit by bird poop when walking around New York City, where roughly 1 million pigeons live in a 469 square mile area.

Amazingly, that equation determined that you have about a 1.14 percent chance of being hit by bird poop in New York City in a two-hour window. Would luck follow? Looks like you'll have to take your chances!

You're probably hoping next time you see a flock of seagulls that one will just feel a few bubble guts and release those bird droppings. Hey, it might feel like a bad day at first, but it could be your lucky day. If it happens, go and buy that lottery ticket immediately.
