Friskies is taking a new approach to feeding some of the pickiest eaters of the animal world.
So what, exactly, is this novel tactic? Well, the company is simply asking cats what they like best.
Friskies' Cat Concoctions is a new line of wet cat food that was developed by cats, for cats. The line features four new flavor creations: Scrumptious Salmon & Chicken Liver Dinner Pate, Chicken in Creamy Crabby Sauce, Cod in Cheesy Bacon Flavored Sauce, and Lamb in Clam Flavored Sauce.
"At Friskies, we're always looking for new, unique things to do...We have a lot of great tasting cat food, but we don't want to just do more of the same, and we know that cats are quirky and have their own wants and needs," Friskies Brand Manager Jessica Nichols told mental_floss, of the new line.
In order to develop the new flavor combinations, Friskies scientists compiled a collection of flavors already known to be popular with cats. Then, they paired those flavors in a number of odd varieties, and turned to their whiskered colleagues for the final word.
Testing took place in the company's St. Joseph, Missouri facility, which houses a number of cats, many of which have come from shelters.
"We literally gave each cat two bowls and asked them to choose which one they liked," says Nichols.
The cats' reactions to the food offerings determined which flavor combinations advanced to the next round of taste testing. Finally, the four winners emerged. According to Nichols, the Cod and Cheesy Bacon Flavored Sauce is the least appealing to the human nose, but it has a celebrity fan. The Grumpy Cat, of Grumpy Cat fame, is all about the cod and bacon, says owner Tabatha Bundesen.
Apparently the "for cats, by cats" approach to developing cat food was a good call by Friskies. Nichols reports that the launch has been among the company's most successful wet food launches and that the overall response to Cat Concoctions has been "overwhelmingly positive."
Friskies, which is owned by Purina, recently debuted the Cat Concoctions line at a New York City launch party. Currently, four Cat Concoctions flavors are available for purchase in stores, and another two will become available next January.
