This Fluffy Duckling Sees No Different Species, Thinks Labrador is His Mom

Posted by Paige Cerulli

The dog in this video has a little shadow - a fluffy duckling who's convinced that the dog is his mom.

Ducklings and other young animals naturally become strongly attached to their mothers - after all, their survival depends on this bond. Because ducklings are bonded to their mothers, they stay close to them, which allows their mothers to help protect them from predators and danger.

This initial bond, formed soon after birth, is called imprinting. But sometimes, ducklings get a little confused - at least, this duckling did.

The duckling in this video has made a new friend, and he appears to think that this friend is his mother. The problem is, the friend that he's made is a rather large Labrador Retriever who doesn't quite understand the situation.

Still, the duckling follows the dog around just like he would follow his mother. Thankfully, the dog seems quite tolerant of the situation, even if he is a little bit bewildered.

The video above is certainly a cute scene, but you wouldn't want to ever leave your dog alone with a duckling or any other animal that small. You can see how, even accidentally, a dog could quickly injure the duckling.

If you do plan on bringing ducklings in to your farm, you can teach your dog to respect them and even get along with them. It's important to introduce ducklings, or any other new animal, gradually.

Always make sure that your dog is calm during the introductions, and keep your dog on a leash for easier control. You'll need to teach your dog that the ducklings are not toys or food; if your dog advances toward them in a playful manner, make sure that you tell him "no" and redirect his attention. Reward your dog when he ignores the ducklings or calmly examines them.

The better you know your dog, the more you'll be able to tailor his training and introductions to other animals. Even if you feel that your dog is fine with other, smaller animals, it's still a good idea to supervise whenever they are all together.
