An Orange County, Florida man made a most unexpected discovery on his way to work early one morning.
At about 4:30 a.m., Patrick Hennessey happened upon two pit bulls in the middle of the road.
The dogs were clearly bonded and wouldn't leave each other's side. One of them was injured, so Hennessey called the Orange County Sheriff's Office for help.
Shortly thereafter, Deputies Reed and Boggs arrived on scene to stay with the dogs until Orange County Animal Services could come pick them up.
The dogs relaxed a little when the deputies arrived; they seemed to know that the men were there to help.
The officers performed basic first-aid on the injured dog's wounds, and both dogs cuddled up to the officers.
Deputies Reed and Boggs comforted the dogs until Orange County Animal Services arrived.
The dogs, both females, are currently receiving care and rehabilitation from their ordeal. Shelter staffers named them Justice and Liberty and are happy to report that they are loving, playful dogs who will soon be available for adoption.
"Deputies Boggs and Reed comforted the two scared dogs while waiting for Animal Services to arrive...These two ladies are now safe and thriving in our care," reads a post on the Orange County Animal Services Facebook page.
