What do you get when a dog, a cat, and a rat are put in a room together?
No, this isn't the start to a bad joke. It's the story of why three rescue animals waited three weeks in a shelter so they could be adopted together. When a dog named Sasha, a cat named Jack, and a rat named Tweaks were dropped off at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society in Wisconsin, their former owner told staff members all three of the animals were friends.
The trio's former family was downsizing their home, and they could no longer give their pets the attention they deserved. They surrendered their mixed-match group of furry friends to the shelter in hopes of giving them better lives.
But before they could get started looking for new forever families, they needed to be checked out by the shelter's veterinarian. Jack the cat was up first. When he was brought into the examination room, the seemingly-docile feline suddenly changed his attitude. He was scared and growled at the technicians whenever they came close. The examination hadn't gotten far when someone had the idea of bringing the dog into the room. If the owner was right, the comfort of a buddy might help the stressed-out cat.
As it turned out, it worked. Jack instantly settled when he saw his canine sister, but no one forgot about the third side of their friendship triangle. They were slightly skeptical, but they decided to bring the rat in, too.
Any worries they had quickly vanished as the rat ran directly toward his friends. Tweaks met Sasha first, and the pair shared a joyous reunion involving licks and kisses by both sides. Then the rat saw the cat. Jack was taking a cat nap, but Tweaks went right up to him and laid by his paws.
Shelter volunteers were amazed at the reaction and dubbed the trio of unexpected friends, "The Rat Pack." After seeing the emotional bond the animals shared, the shelter was determined to keep The Rat Pack together. But finding a family that would take all three wasn't easy. It was three weeks until the right people walked into the shelter.
Kathy Berens and her daughter had adopted from the shelter before. They already had a cat, but they were looking for another--and they were also hoping to find a dog to fit their family. What Berens didn't come for, however, was a rat.
She was initially resistant to adopting the rat, but volunteers convinced her to meet him. Tweaks was affectionate and cute--not at all what she was expecting--and it didn't take long for her to fall in love.
In the end, the Berens family knew they had room in their hearts to give all three members of The Rat Pack a place in their home.
