Cat Jumps From Fire, Escaping Out Five-Story Window

Who says black cats aren't lucky? One cat jumps from the window of a burning building and sticks the landing.

With such heavy topics in the news lately, from the coronavirus pandemic to the airstrikes between Israel and Hamas, a brave black cat jumps into the spotlight to bring a little hope into everyone's day.

In a video posted by the Chicago Fire Department, you can see they are standing outside an apartment building that was on fire. After a couple of seconds, you see a black cat jump from the burning building. It lands with a springy bounce, seemingly unphased by the free fall.

Accidentally Videoing as Cat Jumps From Fire

The building was on 65th St. and Lowe Ave in the Englewood area. The fifth-floor window was the only way the black cat could escape the apartment fire that happened Thursday, May 13. Thankfully, there was a broken window giving the black cat a way out.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said the cat was not injured. The department just happened to be videoing as crews were putting out the flames and were able to catch the precise moment the cat jumps from a burning building. According to the Associated Press, the cat seems to test the side of the building to see if it's safe before it takes the leap.

They posted the incredible video to their department Twitter account. Social media users and animal lovers flocked to the video that now has over one million views. It has been shared on numerous media outlets, from CNN to NBC capturing cat lovers' hearts from Los Angeles to Florida. There is no mistaking that this is one lucky cat.

Langford said, "It went under my car and hid until she felt better after a couple of minutes and came out and tried to scale the wall to get back in."

It almost looks like this was not the first time this Chicago cat jumped out the window. As one Twitter user points out, you can see that the cat barely missed a wall and lands on a skinny strip of grass that borders the sidewalk from the Google street view.

However, according to New York Daily News, the cat's owner says he is just a house cat who never goes outside. In all the commotion, the New York news outlet reported that the cat went missing. The owner is hoping that someone will find him and bring him home. Neighbors in the area are keeping an eye out for him.

Firefighters said the blaze stayed in one apartment and did not spread. They are still working to determine the cause of the fire.

This cat is not the first kitty to leap out of a burning building to escape a fire. In October of 2020, a kitty jumping out of a second-story window became breaking news. The cat was scooped up and handed to a police officer to keep it safe.
