Canary Mastiffs Are The Ultimate Guard Dog

Fearless, confident, and loyal, the Canary Mastiff is the dog you want protecting your family.

Look no further if you are looking for the perfect guard dog - the Perro de Presa Canario will fit the bill. Originally from Spain, the Perro de Presa Canario, commonly known as the Canary Mastiff, is a large Molosser-type dog breed. (Think Pitbulls, Bulldogs, and the English Mastiff among others.) A robust dog, the Canary Mastiff was originally bred as a working dog: guarding farms and herding cattle.

Even though the Canary Mastiff dog might seem intimidating at first, don't let his large stature fool you - this breed is known for its calm demeanor and balanced temperament.

The Story Behind the Presa Canario Dog

Originally hailing from the Canary Islands in Spain, this Spanish dog breed is also the animal symbol of Gran Canaria (a.k.a. the Grand Canary Island). Nowadays, they make a great family member, but sadly, these dogs have a horrific past. Because they are such a large breed, this mastiff-type dog has a history of being used in dog fighting in the United States.

Personality

A dog known for their calm but alert temperament, the Canary Mastiff make a great guard dog for your family. They also make great catch dogs, suiting all your hunting (and herding!) needs.

Contrary to what people might perceive, the Canary Mastiff is actually not a dangerous dog. However, without the proper training and early socialization, these Canarian Molossers can become aggressive toward other dogs and be suspicious of strangers.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) tells us about the Canary Mastiff, "Obedient and docile with family members, he is very devoted to his master, but can be suspicious of strangers. When alert, his stance is firm and vigilant."

Breed Standard

The Canary Mastiff is a very active dog breed and they require a lot of exercise - this is definitely not your average lap dog! Giving your dogo canario daily exercise is highly recommended: like daily long walks (or even jogs!) will make your four-legged friend very happy and will avoid any destructive behaviors.

Grooming is a breeze when it comes to the Canary Mastiff; With no undercoat and short hair, only weekly brushings are needed to maintain a healthy dog coat, which comes in beautiful brindle and white markings.
