Yes, it's fine to feed your dog oatmeal but use water rather than milk. Some dogs are sensitive to dairy products! Also, don't serve it raw. It should be plain and cooked before offering this as a snack for your dog.

Is oatmeal actually good for dogs? Are there health benefits?

We offer a lot of advice and research on human foods that are ok for dogs to eat! Oatmeal has a lot of benefits, including being high in fiber and containing lots of nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants.

Can Dogs Eat Oatmeal?

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), oatmeal is a great alternative carbohydrate for dogs with sensitivities to wheat and grains:

"Oatmeal contains vitamin B, which helps maintain a healthy coat, and linoleic acid, which is a type of omega-6 fatty acid that helps to keep a dog's skin strong and healthy.

"It's also a great source of soluble fiber, which can regulate blood glucose levels and help dogs that have irregular bowl movements."

How do you prep oatmeal for dogs?

The Spruce Pets provides these helpful guidelines:

  • Cook oatmeal before giving it to your dog instead of feeding them raw oats.
  • Only serve your dog oatmeal made from whole grain oats. Processed grains offer less health benefits, and may upset your dog's stomach.
  • If serving pre-packaged oatmeal, check the ingredient list first. Some pre-packaged oatmeal varieties contain added sugar or other flavorings. Look out for Xylitol.
  • Plain, cooked oatmeal contains about 150 calories per cup. While that might not sound like a lot, keep in mind that dogs require significantly fewer calories than we do (a 25-pound dog, for example, should only be eating about 550 calories a day to maintain their weight).

What about fruit toppings?

There are fruit toppings that can be added to oatmeal. Try these!

  • Apples (without the core or seeds)
  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Carrots
  • Canned pumpkin

Many experts ask that dog owners make sure to watch for GI upset as feeding your dog foods containing a lot of fiber can lead to diarrhea and vomiting.

Your dog's diet shouldn't only consist of oatmeal! While this snack does contain fiber content your dog can benefit from this should be a snack!
