First, they have a lot of salt and the quantity is much higher than what a dog needs. A hot dog would put him well beyond his daily limit according to experts.
Are hot dogs dangerous for your dog?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) confirms that the ingredients that make up a hot dog can be harmful to your dog. Sodium nitrate is one of the ingredients that can be scary!
"Many hot dogs contain ingredients that are not good for dogs, such as sodium nitrate, which has been linked to cancer; monosodium glutamate (MSG); and sugars or artificial sweeteners. Hot dogs also contain seasonings, such as garlic and onion powder, and garlic and onions can be toxic to dogs."
What are other problems with hot dogs?
Other problems could be a very serious illness called pancreatitis.
Experts at The Spruce Pets, tells us that fatty human foods can cause acute pancreatitis in dogs.
"This is a painful gastrointestinal disease where your dog can have vomiting, a lack of appetite, and lethargy. Some dogs may have a more sensitive gastrointestinal system than others and so may be more sensitive to these high-fat concentrations, but even dogs with the strongest of stomachs can get pancreatitis from eating a hot dog."
Pancreatitis is very scary and typically over holidays like Thanksgiving, many dogs are seen at clinics for this illness. They're given turkey right from the dinner table.
Good alternatives to hot dogs?
Dog owners should consider fruit and veggies as healthy snacks and alternatives to hot dogs. This snack should always supplement your dog's diet and perhaps be added as a topper to dog food. Feed this in moderation of course, as fruit can cause some gastrointestinal upset. Here's a list:
- Apples (without the core or seeds)
- Green Beans
What happens if your dog eats a hot dog?
Your dog can become hydrated from the excess of sodium! If your dog sneaks a hot dog at your BBQ then you should watch for GI upset, diarrhea, vomiting, and they can be a choking hazard, too!
Small pieces are also not a good idea. The salt content, condiments, possible garlic powder, hot dog buns, ketchup and the mystery meat in the hot dog itself are all not good for your pup!
