Can Chickens Eat Strawberries?

Being a responsible flock owner means providing for your chickens well. Treat your flock with care, the proper feed, clean water in clean containers daily, safe housing, the ability to free-range when possible, and professional veterinary care when needed.

Yes... And treats!

Can chickens eat fruit like strawberries?

Yes, they can! One thing I've noticed in caring for my own flock is that bored chickens can peck on each other, and new fruits like strawberries can bring energy into the coop. My chickens free-range so this isn't as much an issue but having snacks available like fruit is a big deal!

Here are some other facts from the Happy Chicken Coop:

  • Strawberries are packed full of vitamin C and B9 as well as antioxidants.
  • Berries typically have lower sugar content than fruit, but in large doses, they can be detrimental to a chicken's health.
  • Always remove moldy fruit in their coop area if your flock isn't taking to within 24 hours.
  • This treat should be given in moderation like you do with watermelon. Make this a special treat for the ladies.

Backyard chickens need a balanced diet. In addition to chicken treats, they need chicken feed! We have some great articles on what a chicken's diet should consist of, and you'll want to look for layer feed at your feed store to ensure you don't wreak havoc on their digestive system.

We have a lot of blackberries in our yard and these, along with raspberries, can also be given to your chickens. Remember that if you have chicks they need starter feed and shouldn't be given these sweet snacks until they're adults. You don't want to create any unwanted health problems.

I'd also stay away from salty foods, too. My chooks love mealworms over everything else, and if you mix these with wild strawberries you'll have best friends forever.

Farm animals are a lot of fun to live with, but they still need fresh water every day and appropriate food that is designed for their digestive systems.

With chickens, you need to worry about egg production and want to ensure everything is working properly. Other snacks that are ok in smaller quantities are veggies, blueberries, and kale; Stay away from anything that is too sugary and apple seeds.
