Urban chicken farmers wanted!
Calling all chicken enthusiasts! If you live in Austin, Texas, you can get paid to set up a chicken coop.
Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) started the program as a way to reduce waste, noting that food scraps can be eliminated from landfills when chickens are available to gobble them up. These feathered friends inspired ARR to start the Home Composting Rebate Program.
Free classes are being offered for beginning chicken farmers. Once you know just how to care for these avians, all you have to do is purchase a coop and submit the rebate application with your receipt.
In return, you get $75 from the city of Austin. And let's not forget an endless supply of fresh eggs!
The chicken-rearing classes are open to the general public, but only Austin residents who pay the "clean community" fee on their utility bill are eligible for the cash back, provided they haven't received a previous rebate.
The city of Austin hopes to reach zero waste by the year 2040, requiring a 90 percent decrease in landfill trash. Backyard chickens are one step closer to that goal.
