How Xena 'The Warrior Puppy' and Johnny with Autism Saved Each Other

Friendship can be transformative.

And that was certainly the case for Xena, "the warrior puppy," and Johnny Hickey, an autistic eight-year-old boy.

Little Xena was found collapsed from exhaustion and malnourishment in a backyard in Georgia. Her rescuers believed she had been severely neglected before being abandoned and left to die.

However, after receiving intensive veterinary care and a hefty dose of TLC, Xena began to recover.

She recovered so well, in fact, that she made an appearance as the guest of honor at a fundraiser for DeKalb Animal Services, the organization that rescued her,

What happened next was life-changing:

What began as a rescue turned into something much more significant. Not only has Xena's life been forever altered, but so has Johnny's. And they're both better for it.

This is yet another example of how animal rescue changes lives.
