Smiley changed so many lives and will truly be missed.
Smiley was a blind therapy dog rescued from a puppy mill by Joanne George, a veterinary technician, in 2004. After graduating from St. John Ambulance (SJA) Therapy Dog program, he became a welcome part of many people’s lives, visiting nursing homes, libraries, and schools. The blind rescue dog helped people of all different disabilities, from kids with autism and special needs to people healing from physical ailments.
“He does something to people,” George told The Huffington Post back in 2015. “People say they feel like a different person after meeting Smiley.”
On Saturday, Smiley’s owners decided it was time for Smiley the 15-year-old dog to pass after two tumors were found on his stomach and liver. The announcement was made on Smiley’s Facebook page:
The little dog with a big heart and a grand purpose left us today at 12:30pmIn Smiley’s honour, please be kind to one another, give back, and always see with your heart ❤️
Smiley the blind therapy dog’s fans came from far and wide to say goodbye to the blind Golden Retriever with the big smile. A candlelight vigil was held in honor of the good dog.
“Candlelight vigil tonight for Smiley. Thank you to all those who came out and to those that lit a candle from home. You will never be forgotten Smiley. We will never be the same. Thank you.”

Since the news of Smiley’s passing, fans everywhere have reached out on social media to say how the dog changed their own lives.
“Nothing I can say. Feel like I want to share something in my heart. Crying since the moment I saw the news. Totally feel your pain, but you should know that Smiley is a family to all those who he affected their lives. I’m from Egypt and I deeply feel like i’m with you right now. He’s light in the darkness. He’s smile in sadness. He’s love in an ugly world filled with hatred.
You’ve no idea how many people share you the pain. He’ll be in our memories forever. A dog that made a change where a lot of humans cannot even make a difference.
Be proud! Your baby gained a lot of Love & spread peace more than you imagine!
Lots of Love & Blessings! “
Smiley will be laid to rest near his home in Stouffville, Ontario where his family can visit him every day.
Even though it is time to say goodbye to a dog that was truly loved by the world, people can take comfort in the fact that Smiley made life easier for many.
Smiley, “the real stuffed animal” darling, will truly be missed ♥️
He is definitely part of everyone who loved him. I’m hearing so many ways in which Smiley affected you all. This account will never be closed, I think we all need it as a source of therapy that we can turn to when we need him. Hopefully in time we can all look back at his photos and videos with only smiles on our faces instead of tears. .photo credit to my good friend @dphoovesandpaws who loved him as much as I did.
