Opt for sweet instead of spooky this Halloween with this easy-to-make strawberry dog costume.
The team over at Shari’s Berries knows Halloween is all about the sweet treats. That is why they created this quick, six-step tutorial for making a DIY strawberry costume that allows you to turn your canine into the sweetest berry in the bunch.
You’ll need basic sewing skills and a few other items from your craft closet to make this cute costume. It can be adapted to fit dogs of all shapes and sizes, and it’s safe and comfortable for them to wear.
- Red thread
- Green thread
- Red felt
- Bright green felt or fleece
- Black felt or fleece
- ⅜ inch elastic
- Sewing machine
- Hot glue gun
- Fabric scissors
- Measuring tape
- Tailor’s chalk
Step 1: Create the Pattern
You’ll need your pup to hold still a few seconds so you can take their measurements. Cut your red felt to meet his size requirements by following the basic pattern. Once you have the right sized pattern, cut a semicircle into the top to use as the head opening.
Tip: Measure the circumference of both your dog’s head and his neck. Pick the larger measurement and multiply that number by 3.14. Then add one. Your final answer is how big the opening should be to fit your pup’s head.
Step 2: Try on and Pin
Check to make sure your measurements are accurate by putting the unfinished outfit on your dog. If the fabric bunches out at the shoulders, fold the excess in and keep it in place with a pin. You’ll address that problem later.
Step 3: Prepare for the Velcro
To make dressing your dog as easy as possible, you’ll use Velcro to keep the costume together. Hold the top and bottom pieces that go along your dog’s torso together and pin the Velcro to the edges. The placement is up to you. You can choose to put one long piece that runs the entire side of the costume or a few separate pieces.
Step 4: Sew the Shoulders
When the pins are in place, carefully take the fabric off your dog and head to the sewing machine. Turn the pattern inside out so the right sides of the fabric are facing in. Find where you pinned the shoulders and sew an angled line based on how much excess fabric there was.
Step 5: Sew the Velcro
Rotate the costume and sew the Velcro in place. For easy removal, sew the rough Velcro to the side of the fabric that will face the dog (wrong side). Put the soft Velcro on the bottom piece of fabric on the side that will face away from the dog. When you match them together, it should fit together without folding or bunching.
Step 6: Add the Leaves and Seeds
The final touches will be the strawberry seeds and leaves. Cut them out using black and green felt and secure them to the costume with a hot glue gun.
