Anchorage bid farewell to a local favorite this month.
On October 8, 2017, Star died peacefully in her home after a bout of illness stretching back a few months. She was 15 years old, at least five years older than the average reindeer life span.
Her owner, Albert Whitehead, posted a sign on her pen that read:
“Returning for a short walk on Saturday afternoon, Star suddenly collapsed and died at home.”
“She only wanted to be around people and dogs, particularly my dog who she loved to run around and play with in the backyard.”
Alaskan reindeer named Star date back to 1961, and according to Whitehead, Star’s full name was Star Number Six, as she was the sixth reindeer named Star.
Anchorage locals left notes outside Star’s home to offer their condolences for the loss of an Alaskan icon.
