Owning horses is one of the best things in the world, but at the same time there are plenty of reasons why we’re all a little crazy for doing it.
There’s a reason why the term “horse crazy” was invented. In truth, we’re all a little crazy for owning horses, if you think about it.
Owning horses takes a major sacrifice of time, money, and sometimes a little sanity. Here are eight reasons why we’re a bit crazy for owning horses.
1. We buy highly expensive, injury-prone animals.
Horses aren’t cheap, and we’re willing to invest thousands of dollars into their purchase. But horses are also highly injury-prone, which means that we’ll also be facing some hefty vet bills during their lifetime.
Still, does that stop us from buying them? Not at all.
2. We ride flight animals ten times our own size.
When we mount up, we’re climbing aboard a flight animal which weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Horses have faster reflexes than we do, and just about anything can scare them.
We must be a little bit crazy just to mount up.
3. We wear long-sleeved heavy show coats in ninety-degree weather.
The forecast for Sunday’s show is ninety degrees, sunny, and super humid? We shrug it off as we pull on our long-sleeved, black show coats to go compete for an hour.
4. We pay outrageous amounts of money to win a ribbon which costs ninety cents.
Trailering, trainer fees, entry fees, show tack, show clothing, braiding fees, grooming fees, stall fees, and more.
These are some of the expenses associated with any show, and we pay them gladly for the chance to win a ribbon which cost no more than ninety cents.
5. We pay hundreds of dollars for shoes every six weeks.
While we cringe at the price tag on a $90 pair of sneakers, we’ll shell out hundreds of dollars for our horses’ shoes every six weeks without blinking.
6. We participate in a sport where we know we’re going to get hurt.
When you ride horses, sooner or later you’ll get hurt. It’s a fact of life. Yet we willingly mount up, knowing that we will fall, and knowing that it’s likely that we’ll break something at some point.
7. We are no strangers to huge vet bills.
Need I say more? If you’ve ever owned a horse with any sort of serious medical issue, then you know how quickly vet bills can pile up.
8. We spend more on this hobby than most people spend in years.
When you think about it, the money that we’ve poured into our horses over the years could send us on many nice vacations, buy us a new vehicle (or two or three), and even be a hefty down payment on a house.
From riding lessons to lease fees to the purchase price of our horses to board, we put down hefty checks every month.
But in truth? It’s all worth it. Sure, maybe we’re crazy for owning horses, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world.
